What to expect

The Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw is the only museum of architecture in Poland, and its first exhibit is the building itself: a 15th-century former Bernardine monastery complex with the former Church of St Bernardino of Siena and a monastic quadrangle with a garden.

The collection numbers about 25 thousand objects, of which roughly five hundred are on permanent display. According to culture.pl, it includes the famous Jaksa tympanum from the former Benedictine abbey at Ołbin and the largest collection of stained glass and glazing in Poland.

The medieval wirydarz, the garden in the middle of the monastic quadrangle, is also open to visitors; the museum calls it its most charming corner. In the east cloister there is a play corner where you can take a break with a child.

Visitors rate the museum well: on Google Maps it has 4.4 out of 5 from 1569 reviews (read on 25 October 2026).

Who it suits: anyone interested in architecture, the history of Wroclaw’s buildings and the art of stained glass, because the largest stained-glass collection in the country is here, and since 2000 the Building Archive of the City of Wroclaw (Archiwum Budowlane Miasta Wrocławia) has been part of the museum. It also works well with small children: the play corner in the cloister and the family ticket for two adults and up to three children under 18 make the visit easier for the whole family.

Who should skip it: families who are mainly after interactive activities for children will do better at the Museum of Illusions on Wyspa Piasek, where you draw with light and explore an upside-down world. Wheelchair users can reach the exhibition spaces by lift and ramp, but cannot get onto either of the two side mezzanines.

How long: allow about an hour and a half. That is what the roughly five hundred objects of the permanent exhibition need, plus the cloister garden and, if you take it, the audio guide.

Tips

  • One free day. Once a week you pay nothing to get in: free admission on Wednesdays; the museum reminded visitors of this in a post on 19 October 2026. It is the cheapest way to find out whether this exhibition is for you; on other days: standard ticket 20 PLN (about 5 EUR), reduced 14 PLN (about 3 EUR).
  • Two days into the evening. On Thursdays and Fridays the museum opens and closes later than on other days (on Thursdays 12:00-19:00, the same on Fridays), so these are good days for a visit after work. For a morning visit pick another day, and remember that the museum is closed on Mondays.
  • Quiet hours. On Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings the museum runs no group tours or workshops, and it turns down the sound and dims the lights in the exhibitions. This is the best time for people sensitive to noise and for anyone who wants to visit without groups.
  • Not at the last minute. The ticket office stops selling tickets before the museum closes, so do not arrive just before the end of the day; details are on the museum’s website.
  • An audio guide in four versions. At the Infopunkt (information point) you can borrow an audio guide at no charge, with a path in Polish, a path in English, audio description of selected objects and a path in easy-to-read language (ETR). A portable induction loop and cards for communicating with Deaf people are also available there.
  • Accessibility. The building is partly adapted: there is a 6 cm threshold in front of the main entrance, and in the entrance area a lift and a ramp lead to the exhibition spaces. Google Maps also lists a wheelchair-accessible toilet; the side mezzanines cannot be reached in a wheelchair.
  • Family ticket and senior discount. The family ticket covers two adults and up to three children under 18, and holders of the Wrocławska Karta Seniora (Wroclaw Senior Card) buy a separate reduced ticket, cheaper than the ordinary reduced one, on showing the card; the museum’s price list gives the prices of both.
  • Guided group tours in English. The museum guides groups in Polish and in English; the tour fee is charged per group, and each participant also needs an entry ticket; the price list is on the museum’s website.

Getting there

  • Address: ul. Bernardyńska 7, 50-156 Wrocław.
  • Tram and bus: the museum directs visitors to the “Galeria Dominikańska” stop, which according to the timetable in the open data of Wroclaw City Hall (Urząd Miejski Wrocławia) is about 80 m from the museum. It is served by trams 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17 and 23 and buses 106, 110, 112, 113, 114, 120, 914, 920, 924, D, K and N, and at night by line 246; of the four nearest stops, this one has the most lines.
  • Other stops: according to the same timetable, “Pl. Nowy Targ” (about 240 m; trams 6, 8, 9, 11, 17 and 23), “Poczta Główna” (about 300 m; buses 145, 146, 149, 914, 924, A, D and N) and “Urząd Wojewódzki (Muzeum Narodowe)” (about 370 m; trams 2 and 10, buses 914, 924, A and N).
  • By car: the car park in front of the building is for museum staff only. A suitably marked vehicle of a person with a disability may park there after the museum has been notified by phone in advance (tel. 71 369 99 01).

Background

When you enter the exhibitions, you enter a monastery: the museum occupies a 15th-century former Bernardine complex with the Church of St Bernardino of Siena and a quadrangle with a garden. The cloisters and the medieval garden you pass on the way are part of the same monastery.

The museum was set up here in 1965, in the rebuilt interiors of the former monastery and church, although plans for it went back to the 1950s. According to culture.pl, it began as a branch of the Museum of the City of Wroclaw, under the name Muzeum Architektury i Odbudowy (Museum of Architecture and Reconstruction); it has been an independent institution since 1971.

In 1989 it was ranked among the museums of special significance, and in 2000 the Building Archive of the City of Wroclaw was incorporated into it. Today it holds about 25 thousand objects, and the English and Polish Wikipedia both call it the only museum of architecture in Poland.
