Location
What to expect

The Historical Museum in Wroclaw is a place where a single visit takes you through the city’s entire history: the permanent exhibition “1000 lat Wrocławia” (1,000 Years of Wrocław) runs from the early Middle Ages to the present day. It is housed in the former Royal Palace on ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego.
The exhibition brings together over 3000 objects, spread across 21 exhibition rooms. It is complemented by the royal chambers and an original Baroque room lined with Delft-type ceramic tiles, so alongside the city’s history you also see the interiors of the former residence of the Prussian rulers.
The palace does not belong to this museum alone. It shares it with the Museum of Medallic Art (Muzeum Sztuki Medalierskiej), and the Historical Museum itself is one of the seven branches of the Wroclaw City Museum (Muzeum Miejskie Wrocławia). The Baroque-Classicist palace also has a garden.
The Royal Palace’s Google Maps card has 4.6 out of 5 from 3181 reviews (read on 25 October 2026), so visitors rate the place highly.
Who it suits: anyone in Wroclaw for the first time who wants to see, in one place, how the city changed over a thousand years. Also visitors from abroad, because at the ticket office you can borrow an audio guide to the exhibition in Polish, German or English, and people with mobility disabilities, for whom the museum is adapted.
Who should skip it: if you want to go back further than the Middle Ages, you will do better at the Archaeological Museum in the City Arsenal , where the permanent exhibition on three floors shows, among other things, the bones of mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses. If you are mainly after painting and sculpture from all of Silesia, choose the National Museum in Wroclaw .
How long: allow about two hours. Over 3000 objects in 21 rooms is a lot for one exhibition, and the royal chambers come on top; with the audio guide, plan for more rather than less.
Tips
- Free day. Once a week you can see the permanent exhibitions without paying: free admission on Thursdays. The Wroclaw City Museum reminded visitors of this day at the Royal Palace in a post on 27 August 2026; on other days: standard ticket 25 PLN (about 6 EUR), reduced 20 PLN (about 5 EUR).
- Closing days. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; on the other days it is open. It stays open longest on Sundays (on Sundays 10:00-18:00), which gives you the most time for such a large exhibition.
- Not at the last minute. The museum admits its last visitors some time before closing, and 21 rooms cannot be seen properly in a quarter of an hour; arrive with time to spare.
- Holidays. Besides its regular closing days, the museum is also closed on a few holidays in November and December (dates in the practical information box), and on 31 December it has shorter opening hours; details are on the museum’s website.
- An audio guide in three languages. At the palace ticket office you can borrow an audio guide to the “1000 lat Wrocławia” exhibition in Polish, German or English. It is a good solution if you are visiting with someone who does not read Polish.
- Guided groups. Guided tours are for groups of up to 40 people and must be arranged at least three weeks before the visit, at 71 391 69 40 ext. 113.
- Family ticket. Since 1 October 2026 a new price list has applied at the Royal Palace, which also includes a family ticket; the museum gives its price.
- Accessibility. The museum is adapted for visitors with mobility disabilities, and the palace’s Google Maps card lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance and toilet.

Background
The palace the exhibition leads you through is a Baroque-Classicist building with a garden; the Polish Wikipedia also calls it the Spätgen Palace (Pałac Spätgenów). From 1750 to 1918 it was one of the residences of the Prussian rulers of the Hohenzollern dynasty, and it is their royal chambers that complement the exhibition today.
In 1918 the palace was handed over to the city, and on 20 September 1926 the Palace Museum (Schlossmuseum) opened in it. The building has served as a museum ever since.
The museum in its present form is much younger. The palace was renovated and modernised from 2001, and Radio Wrocław announced that the new seat of the Wroclaw City Museum and the “1000 lat Wrocławia” exhibition would open there on 19 April 2009.
