Anna Bujak. Sub rosa
31 July 2026 - 30 December 2026
The installation “Anna Bujak. Sub rosa” is a single monumental cast-aluminium sculpture, shown 31 July 2026 - 30 December 2026 in the courtyard of the Four Domes Pavilion in Wroclaw. The Wroclaw artist made it specifically for this place, and MaĹ‚gorzata MicuĹ‚a is in curatorial charge.
Four Domes Pavilion - Museum of Contemporary Art on the exhibition (our translation of the museum’s Polish text):
Presented in the courtyard of the Four Domes Pavilion Museum of Contemporary Art, the large-scale sculpture “Sub rosa” by Anna Bujak was made specifically for this place. In its conception it refers to the architecture of the building and to its pre-war history. Drawing on the formal solutions of Gothic art, the work becomes a manifesto on the professional aspirations of women artists.
What to expect
This is not an exhibition in galleries but a single work: a monumental sculpture from 2026, cast entirely in aluminium. The museum and the wroclaw.pl website both stress that it is the first site-specific work made in the Pavilion’s courtyard by a woman.
The artist describes her work as a cathedral built of rose stems, joining architecture with the organic form of the plant and leaving room for many interpretations. Iwona Dorota Bigos, head of the Pavilion, quoted by wroclaw.pl, says its form recalls a Gothic building. She asks whether it is a cathedral under construction or one already being deconstructed.
The title is the Latin phrase sub rosa. The museum relates it to women’s silent aspirations, often voiced only in secret, and also to actions taken in hiding. Hence the sculpture’s subject: the professional aspirations of women artists, expressed in a form drawn from the Gothic.
The museum has posted a one-minute film on its YouTube channel in which Anna Bujak talks about her creative process, her inspiration in Gothic art and her work with cast aluminium:
Context
The installation accompanies the exhibition “Stulecie. W rocznicÄ™ wielkiej wystawy Ĺ›lÄ…skiej sztuki Ĺ›redniowiecznej” (Centenary. On the anniversary of the great exhibition of Silesian medieval art). “Sub rosa” itself is part of the project “Gotyk w Polsce” (Gothic in Poland), run in 2026-2027 by the National Museum in Wroclaw, the National Museum in PoznaĹ„ and Wawel Royal Castle.
The sculpture also refers to the building it stands in. The Pavilion was designed by Hans Poelzig and built in 1912-1913 on the grounds laid out for the Centennial Exhibition of 1913. Until 1945 it served temporary art exhibitions.
Anna Bujak is a Wroclaw artist and a winner of Radio WrocĹ‚aw’s EMOCJE 2025 culture award.
Tickets and time
Ticket: the sculpture stands in the Pavilion’s courtyard, and the museum lets visitors into the courtyard without a ticket. So you can see it even if you are not going into the exhibition galleries. The Pavilion’s cafe does not require a ticket either.
Where: in the courtyard of the Four Domes Pavilion at ul. Wystawowa 1, next to the Centennial Hall. Trams 1, 2, 4, 10 and 19 stop at the “Hala Stulecia” stop, about 190 m from the Pavilion.
Time needed: this is one sculpture, so about a quarter of an hour is enough to see it, including the artist’s one-minute film. Plan a longer visit if you add the permanent collection in the Pavilion’s east wing.
Who it is for: people interested in contemporary sculpture, in the Gothic read anew and in the place of women in art. Also anyone coming to the Pavilion or the Centennial Hall anyway, because you can enter the courtyard without a ticket.
Who can skip it: anyone looking for an exhibition to fill an afternoon, or for medieval originals. This is one contemporary sculpture, and the Gothic serves it as a point of reference for its form.
