What to expect

This is the room a museum normally keeps locked. Thesaurus Cracoviensis is the Museum of Krakow’s working collection store - more than 200,000 objects gathered over 123 years, parked in glass-fronted storage furniture - and it lets you walk through on a guided route, past conservation workshops watched through a glazed partition. There is no exhibition here in the usual sense, and that is the point.

The stores are named rather than numbered: the Treasury holds coins and medals, the Arsenal weapons, the Old Library prints, the Draper’s Warehouse and Grandma’s Wardrobe textiles and clothing. The basement keeps Krakow nativity scenes (szopki), furniture and decorative art; higher floors hold numismatics, arms and prints, then textiles and paintings. A Polish culture blogger who took the tour in 2022 came away remembering an automaton clock with moving eyes, Stanisław Wyspiański’s theatre costumes, Helena Modrzejewska’s feather fan and the original Lajkonik costume, now more than a century old.

What makes the visit unusual is the absence of editing. Objects are catalogued but deliberately left uncaptioned for visitors, so nothing tells you which piece matters more - a masterpiece and a household object stand side by side. In the painting store the guide slides out racks in no thematic order at all: a landscape, a still life, a portrait of a forgotten burgher. If you come to museums for a story well told, you will feel adrift. If you want to see how a museum actually works and what it does with its holdings for the other 51 weeks of the year, this is 75 minutes you cannot buy anywhere else in Krakow.

Best for travellers who have already done the city-centre branches, plus collectors, conservation enthusiasts and museum-studies people. Skip unless you have a Saturday to spare: with only four tour slots a week and a half-hour trip each way, this is a planned outing, not a spontaneous one - and with small children it is 75 minutes of walking and listening, with nothing to touch.

Tips

  • Book online before Saturday at bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl. There are four entries a week - 10:00, 11:15, 13:00 and 14:15 - and an individual tour takes at most nine people. The desk sells only what is left.
  • Do not be late. The visiting rules give the guide a 15-minute wait from the slot time; after that the ticket is forfeited with no refund.
  • Allow 75 minutes for the tour itself, plus roughly an hour of travel there and back from the Old Town.
  • No photography is permitted in the stores, and no filming. Bags over 30 litres go to the cloakroom, so bring a notebook rather than a camera bag.
  • Ask about the language when you book. The visit runs with a museum guide and the museum does not publish an English tour schedule; objects carry no visitor captions, so the guide is the whole commentary. Contact thesaurus@muzeumkrakowa.pl or +48 12 422 51 47.
  • Don’t miss the sliding painting racks, the Lajkonik costume and the glazed corridor above the conservation studios.
  • Take the 10:00 slot if you want the rest of the day in the centre; 14:15 is the last admission of the week.
  • Accessibility is not published for this branch and the route covers four levels - phone ahead if stairs are a problem. Children under 7 enter free; group tickets are 24 PLN per person, school groups 12 PLN per pupil.

Getting there

The centre sits in Bielany, at the western edge of the Zwierzyniec district near the Las Wolski woods - about half an hour from the Main Market Square, and well outside anything you would reach on foot.

  • Bus: get off at Bielany Szkoła. Line 102 from Krowodrza Górka, line 219 from Rondo Grunwaldzkie, or lines 109, 209, 229, 239 and 269 from the Salwator direction. Two minutes’ walk from the stop.
  • Car: follow ul. Księcia Józefa along the Vistula towards Tyniec; the building is at number 337, on the right.
  • Bike: the Vistula riverside path runs flat all the way from the centre to Bielany.

Nearby

Nothing else museum-like is within walking distance, so build the Saturday around the branches whose collections are stored here.

  • Krzysztofory Palace - the Museum of Krakow’s main seat on the Main Market Square, where the same kind of material is arranged into a story about the city.
  • Wyspiański Museum - the direct link: Wyspiański’s theatre costumes are among the textiles shown on the store tour.
  • Matejko House - the opposite model of a museum: one interior, one biography, everything captioned.

Background

The centre opened on 6 December 2017 in the unfinished wing of Primary School no. 48, a building the city handed to the museum on a 30-year right of use on 5 July 2007. The roof was raised, a basement dug and the shell rebuilt into four levels totalling some 2,209 m2.

The concept belongs to the museum’s director, Michał Niezabitowski. On the opening day, as the Polish history service dzieje.pl reported, he argued that only a handful of cities anywhere show their stores this way, and that a permanent home spares objects the damage caused by constant moving between exhibitions. The branch won the Sybilla award in 2018 and a distinction in the European Museum of the Year competition in 2021.
