You cannot visit this museum until 2028. The branch sits in the former Światowid cinema at os. Centrum E 1, and that building is currently a construction site: it is being modernised and extended, and there is no permanent exhibition to walk into. So do not cross Kraków for it. Come for the district, and treat the museum as the institution that will eventually explain the district to you.

The scale of the works explains the length of the closure. Floor space is to grow from 1,575 m2 to roughly 4,400 m2, with a new permanent exhibition about Nowa Huta and its residents going in underground. The plans also include education rooms, a neighbourhood space with its own street entrance, a cafe, a roof terrace and an open-air summer cinema. The budget is 99,639,661.46 PLN, of which 76,466,590.90 PLN comes from the European Regional Development Fund and 23,173,071 PLN from the city.

The branch did not shut down, though - it moved. The office and educational programme run from os. Szkolne 22, the phone and the inbox are answered, and the guide-service price list is live: 220 PLN for a tour of the shelter sub-branch, 390 PLN for a guided walk around Nowa Huta, 390 PLN for a walk tracing the district’s Cold War shelters.

So who is this address for? Right now, for someone already in Nowa Huta who wants a knowledgeable local guide - that is the service the museum is actually selling this year. After it reopens, for anyone interested in planned cities, everyday life under communism, or industrial Poland. The building itself is worth a quarter of an hour even behind hoardings: a listed late Socialist Realist landmark on the frontage of plac Centralny, and free to look at.

Tips

  • The branch is closed for renovation. No opening hours and no ticket prices are published, because there is nothing to enter. The investment project runs 2024-2028; local press has reported an early-2028 opening.
  • Go to the shelters instead. Nowa Huta Underground at os. Szkolne 37 and at os. Szkolne 22 open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:00; tickets 22 PLN, 16 PLN reduced, free on Wednesdays.
  • Mondays and Tuesdays are dead here - both shelter sub-branches are shut. This is the single most useful planning fact for old Nowa Huta.
  • Book a guide ahead by phone (+48 12 446 78 21) or email (nowahuta@muzeumkrakowa.pl ). A guided walk is the closest thing to the missing exhibition, and the museum’s guides work in the district they are describing.
  • Check the branch page for the opening date, not a search engine. Deadlines on a hundred-million-złoty build move, and the museum posts the change first.
  • Allow a quarter of an hour for the building itself. Until 2028, the Światowid facade, the plac Centralny frontages and Aleja Róż are the best part of this visit - and the free part.
  • After it reopens, budget more than an hour. The building will nearly triple in size and the permanent exhibition goes underground.
  • Labels and English-language provision for the new exhibition have not been announced. If you need English, ask when you book a guide.

Getting there

By tram: from the city centre, head east along al. Jana Pawła II to the Plac Centralny im. R. Reagana stop. From the main railway station, allow about half an hour. The former Światowid cinema stands right off the square at os. Centrum E 1.

On foot: from plac Centralny it is 10-15 minutes north to os. Szkolne 22 and 37, along Aleja Róż, the district’s original ceremonial avenue. That walk is the best introduction to the subject: 1950s blocks, shops at street level, green courtyards behind them.

By car: not worth it. There is nothing to drive to at the closed building, and the tram plus a 15-minute walk gets you to the shelters just as fast.

Nearby

The obvious substitute is Nowa Huta Underground at os. Szkolne 37 , an air-raid shelter under a school with the exhibition “Stan zagrożenia” - the part of the district’s story that stayed open right through the closure. A few minutes away, the second shelter, Nowa Huta Underground at os. Szkolne 22 , shares an address with the museum’s temporary office. On the tram back towards the centre, get off in Czyżyny for the Polish Aviation Museum on a historic airfield, which rounds off the industrial and technical side of the trip.

Background

The decision to build Nowa Huta was taken on 17 May 1947, the first works began on 23 June 1949, and the new town was absorbed into Kraków on 1 January 1951. Tadeusz Ptaszycki laid it out for about 100,000 people around plac Centralny, with four arteries radiating from the square. The Lenin Steelworks opened on 22 July 1954. The old core entered the register of monuments in 2004 and was recognised as a Historic Monument of Poland in 2023.

The Światowid cinema, designed by Andrzej Uniejewski, was built between 1955 and 1957. The large auditorium opened on 21 July 1957 and the small hall on 10 December that year; two air-raid shelters sat in the basement. Films ran here until 1992. The Museum of the Polish People’s Republic occupied the building from 2008 to 2012, and in 2019 that institution merged with the Museum of Krakow’s “Dzieje Nowej Huty” branch to create the Nowa Huta Museum. The building was listed as a monument on 29 May 2015.
