Nothing here sits behind glass. Krakil is roughly 400 square metres of hands-on stations spread over two floors of the Potocki manor house on Straszewskiego, five minutes from Wawel and ten from the Main Square. It opened in May 2019 and it is a privately run attraction rather than a museum with a collection, which matters if you are planning a day around Krakow’s historic museums.

The route opens with historical trickery - old optical devices, Chinese mirrors, a miraskop that floats an object in mid-air above its base. The science half follows: a coloured-shadow wall, a plasma sphere, a surface you draw on with light, rooms built to break your sense of perspective. The museum sorts its stations into optical, physical, special and historical illusions, and adds a few new ones each year.

Most visitors come for the upside-down room, where the furniture is on the ceiling and the photograph looks as if gravity had been switched off. Photography is unrestricted everywhere in the building. Instructions on most stations are in four languages - Polish, English, French and Ukrainian - so nothing is lost if you read no Polish.

Krakil runs on its guides more than on its labels. Whoever is on duty in a room will unpack the physics and field questions, as the family site Trasa dla Bobasa describes it; the museum’s site adds that they help with photographs. Come as a group of more than ten and an hour-long guided tour costs nothing extra.

By the museum’s own account, its guides are trained in teaching methods and adjust to the age of their audience. The museum also says they can greet visitors in sign language. Its website is less specific: guides always nearby, ready to explain the science and tell the stories.

Families get the most out of it. Trasa dla Bobasa rates it a rare fit for children years apart in age: preschooler and teenager stay busy at once, and low platforms bring the tables within reach of the smallest. Adults on their own come for the same reason - effects you test with your hands, someone to explain them, no objects in cases. To add history and real artefacts to the same afternoon, Collegium Maius is a ten-minute walk north.

As a rainy-afternoon break from Krakow’s heavy wartime and religious museums, it does the job well.

Tips

  • Allow 60 to 90 minutes. That covers both floors at a pace where you actually try each station. The museum publishes no visit length; this is an estimate from visitor accounts.
  • Book online for the discount. Online tickets are sold for a chosen date and time and save 10 percent. Groups over ten people get 30 percent off, and the museum says children under 14 should stay with an adult throughout.
  • Know the price first. Standard 59 PLN, reduced 45 PLN for pupils, students and seniors, 19 PLN for preschoolers, free under 3. A family ticket for two adults with one or two children is 155 PLN. That is one of the steeper tickets in central Krakow.
  • There is no free day. Free entry is by category only: visitors with disabilities and their carers, accredited journalists, licensed guides and ICOM or ICOMOS card holders.
  • English is covered, Polish is not needed. Station instructions carry an English version, and the staff on the floor generally explain the effects in English. There is no audio guide, and none is needed.
  • Leave the pushchair downstairs. Two floors of an old manor house make a pushchair hard work; a carrier is easier. The ground-floor cloakroom has free self-service lockers and takes the pushchair and the coats.
  • Evenings work for families. The museum runs to 20:00 at weekends and 19:00 on weekdays, so a 17:00 or 18:00 arrival still leaves time.
  • Ask at the station. There is no fixed route, you can go back to a favourite exhibit, and the guide in the room will explain any effect the instructions only describe. With children of different ages, that is the easiest way to get each of them an answer pitched at their level.

Getting there

  • Tram: the Filharmonia stop, at the junction of Straszewskiego, Zwierzyniecka and Franciszkańska, is under a minute from the door.
  • Bus: the same Filharmonia stop is served by city buses.
  • On foot: about ten minutes from the Main Square along Wiślna, five minutes from Wawel Hill along the Planty park, and roughly 25 minutes from Krakow Główny station across the Old Town.
  • By car: the Old Town is a restricted-traffic and paid-parking zone and the museum has no car park. Leave the car outside the Planty ring and walk in.

The museum publishes no accessibility information - call before visiting.

Nearby

  • The Stained Glass Museum on aleja Krasińskiego 23, three minutes west, is Krakil’s craft opposite: a working studio, guided tours only, and closed on Sundays and Mondays, so it needs planning around.
  • Collegium Maius on Jagiellońska 15, the Jagiellonian University’s oldest building, is the counterweight to an afternoon of illusions - 45 minutes, 17 PLN, real objects in cases.
  • Bunkier Sztuki Gallery on Plac Szczepański shows contemporary art for 11 PLN and rounds off an afternoon of illusions for anyone who wants some current painting and installation work as well. It is closed on Mondays.
