What to expect

Huta Sztuki Gallery is a small gallery of the Norwid Cultural Centre (Ośrodek Kultury Norwida) in Nowa Huta, devoted to Krakow artists of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, including the Nowa Huta Group (Grupa Nowohucka), which practised matter painting. It has operated at os. Górali 5 since 2018 and is both an exhibition space and a venue for workshops, lectures, meetings and discussions.

The Centre’s own sources differ on exactly what hangs on the walls. The gallery’s page describes a permanent display of works from the Centre’s collection and names nine artists, among them Józef Szajna, Marian Kruczek and Józefa Sobór-Kruczek. A Facebook post by the Centre of 18 September 2026, on the other hand, presents the exhibition “Odczytywanie kolekcji” (Reading the Collection) as a further presentation of the collection, and an Instagram post by the Nowa Huta Heritage Laboratory (Nowohuckie Laboratorium Dziedzictwa) of 22 September names eleven artists, among them Janina Kraupe, Witold Chomicz and Jerzy Panek, who are not on the gallery page’s list. The sources do not settle which list matches what you will see on the day of your visit.

What is certain is that the gallery shows part of the Centre’s collection: the curator Monika Kozioł said so to Gazeta Krakowska in 2024, when the collection numbered over 200 works. The display changes: the jubilee exhibition “Dom Sztuki. Dom Ludzi. 70 lat Ośrodka Kultury Norwida” (House of Art. House of People. 70 Years of the Norwid Cultural Centre) was on view until the end of July 2026, the next one was being installed in August, and on 9 October the gallery invited visitors to “Odczytywanie kolekcji”.

On Google Maps the gallery has 4.8 out of 5, but from only 12 reviews collected over six years (read on 31 October 2026), so the rating says little.

Who it is for: anyone curious about post-war Krakow art and the Nowa Huta Group, and visitors exploring Nowa Huta who want to see what the former works cultural centre of the Lenin Steelworks (Zakładowy Dom Kultury Huty im. Lenina) collected.

Who should skip it: anyone looking for a large museum for half a day, because the main rooms are on the ground floor and only one is a floor below. A wheelchair user will not see everything: level -1 is reached by stairs without a ramp, there is no lift, and the gallery has no toilet adapted for people with disabilities.

How long: allow 30-45 minutes for the exhibition itself, and more if you book a guided tour or catch a workshop or lecture.

Tips

  • Thursday for a longer visit. On Thursdays the gallery is open longest (on Thursdays 11:00-19:00), so it is the best day if you come after work or from the other end of the city.
  • Saturday only until early afternoon. On Saturday the gallery has its shortest hours (on Saturdays 11:00-14:00); there is no visiting on the other days: closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays.
  • Check Facebook before you set off. Between exhibitions the gallery closes for installation (as it did in August 2026), and in January 2026 it announced on Facebook that the exhibition was reopening after a break. The gallery’s profile is the quickest way to find out whether there is anything to see in a given week.
  • Tourist card and concessions. The gallery accepts the My Kraków Tourist Card. The reduced ticket (9 PLN (about 2 EUR)) is available to, among others, children up to the age of 7, pupils, students and doctoral students under 26, disability pensioners, and people with disabilities and their carers, and a disability assistant has a separate ticket, the cheapest on the price list.
  • Guided tours for groups. The gallery runs paid guided tours for groups of up to 25 people. Ask about a date by phone or email; the phone number with its extensions and the gallery’s email address are in the practical box.
  • Entrance from Obrońców Krzyża. The gallery has a separate entrance from ul. Obrońców Krzyża, at pavement level, without steps or high thresholds and wide enough for a wheelchair. The doors do not open automatically.
  • Induction loop on site. Portable induction loops are available at the gallery’s cash desk and at the information desk.

Getting there

  • Address: os. Górali 5, 31-959 Kraków, Nowa Huta; you enter the gallery through a separate entrance from ul. Obrońców Krzyża.
  • Bus: the nearest stop, about 183 m in a straight line, is “Teatr Ludowy”, with lines 123, 139, 160 and 163, which according to the MPK Kraków timetable ran on the checked Friday and Saturday (6 and 7 November 2026) from early morning until late evening. About 215 m in a straight line is the “Żeromskiego” stop, with lines 139, 160 and 163.
  • Bus 132: it stops at both stops, but did not run on the checked weekend of 7-8 November 2026. Line 601 serves both stops at night only.
  • Tram: the “Teatr Ludowy” stop, about 349 m in a straight line, is served by trams 1 and 5 on all three checked days (6-8 November 2026) and by tram 71, which did not run on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Verdict on getting there: the bus is more convenient, because a stop with four lines that also run on Saturday, the gallery’s only weekend opening day, is less than 200 m away. The tram means a walk of more than 300 m in a straight line; nobody has measured the walking time, and the route will be longer than the straight line.

Nearby

Closest, at os. Szkolne 22, about 0.81 km from the gallery in a straight line, is Nowa Huta Underground - os. Szkolne 22 . A little further, at os. Szkolne 37, about 1.1 km in a straight line, lies Nowa Huta Underground - os. Szkolne 37 .

About 1.4 km in a straight line, at ul. Melchiora Wańkowicza 25, stands the Jan Matejko Manor House in Krzesławice , the summer residence and studio of the 19th-century painter: a good contrast to the post-war Krakow art of Huta Sztuki. Both places are open on the same day only on Friday and Saturday, so only then can you combine them in one trip.

Background

The works you see in Huta Sztuki today have a longer pedigree than the gallery itself. The collection of the Norwid Cultural Centre, formerly the works cultural centre of the Lenin Steelworks, numbered over 200 works in 2024, and the curator Monika Kozioł called the gallery the spiritual heir of the “Rytm” Gallery (Galeria “Rytm”).

The gallery itself opened on 16 October 2018 on the initiative of the Centre, with the support of the Krakow authorities and co-financing from the city. According to the Polish Wikipedia, its focus is the work of Krakow artists of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, including the Nowa Huta Group. The Centre, as Gazeta Krakowska wrote in October 2026, cares for the gallery’s collection and also organises many exhibitions and literary events. Besides presentations of the collection, the gallery also shows temporary exhibitions.
