What to expect

The house is named after a woman who may never have existed. Esterka, the Jewish lover of King Casimir the Great, is a legend with no documentary backing, and several buildings in Poland claim her. What is documented is better: a 14th-century Gothic townhouse on the corner of Krakowska and Trynitarska, exceptional among the buildings that once stood on the frontage of the old Kazimierz market square.

Temporary exhibitions usually hang in the barrel-vaulted cellars and on the ground floor. The cellars are the oldest layer of the building and, on most shows, the strongest thing you will see. Look for the window stonework dated to around 1430 and the entrance portal from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The rest of the house - the museum library, the education rooms, part of the collections, the offices - is closed to visitors.

Know what you are buying before you come. There is no permanent display here: the ticket covers whatever exhibition is currently on, and the programme ranges from folk craft to contemporary readings of traditional culture. If the current subject leaves you cold, this building has no fallback. The permanent exhibition sits about 100 metres away in the former Kazimierz town hall on Wolnica square.

Best for three kinds of visitor: anyone already doing the full Ethnographic Museum circuit on the combined ticket, walkers in Kazimierz who like medieval stonework, and people who came for a specific show. Allow 30-45 minutes, not an afternoon.

Tips

  • Tuesday is the cheap day. The temporary exhibition costs 15 PLN instead of 20 PLN, reduced 10 PLN instead of 15 PLN, and the permanent exhibition in the town hall is free. One common misreading: the free Tuesday applies to the town hall only - here it is a discount, not free entry.
  • Take the combined ticket if you are doing both buildings. 35 PLN standard and 23 PLN reduced covers the permanent and the temporary exhibition, against 20 PLN for this house alone. Children under 7, group carers, assistants of visitors with disabilities and museum staff enter free.
  • Allow 30-45 minutes. The museum publishes no visit duration; this is our estimate from the footprint of the exhibition space, the cellars plus the ground floor. The full circuit including the town hall runs two to two and a half hours.
  • The step-free entrance is on Trynitarska, not Krakowska. The main door has an 18 cm step down. The Trynitarska gate has a ramp with a handrail and a doorbell at 100 cm, and there is a passenger lift in the courtyard.
  • The lift reaches the cellars. The cellar rooms can be reached by stairs or by lift.
  • Wednesday 15:00-18:00 is quiet hours. The museum dims the ground-floor rooms, lowers the sound and admits individual visitors only, no groups. Useful for visitors on the autism spectrum and for anyone who finds Kazimierz in high season too much.
  • Ignore the prices on tourist listings. City information portals still quote 14/8 PLN for exhibitions here. That figure is out of date; the museum’s own price list says 20 PLN and 15 PLN.
  • Last entry is 17:30 and Mondays are closed. The museum shuts on major public holidays and runs shortened hours to 16:00 on selected dates, including 11 November and New Year’s Eve. Check the museum’s site if your visit falls on one of those.

Getting there

Address: ul. Krakowska 46, on the corner of Trynitarska, one block from Wolnica square.

Tram: the Plac Wolnica stop is on Krakowska itself, under two minutes from the door. Krakowska is the main tram axis of western Kazimierz, so arrivals from the Old Town or from across the river in Podgórze are straightforward.

Walking from the Main Market Square: about 15 minutes down Grodzka, then Stradomska and Krakowska.

Walking from Plac Nowy, the centre of the Kazimierz bar and food district: about 8 minutes via Meiselsa and Wolnica square. This is the shortest approach if you are already in Kazimierz.

Walking from Wawel Castle: about 10 minutes along Stradomska.

There is no museum car park, and the whole district is a paid parking zone.

Nearby

Around the corner on Wolnica square, the former Kazimierz town hall holds the Ethnographic Museum ’s permanent exhibition - the same combined ticket covers both buildings, which makes it the natural second half of the visit.

Five minutes away, in a former tram depot on św. Wawrzyńca street, the Museum of Engineering and Technology is the obvious change of register when a temporary show has taken half an hour and the afternoon is still young. It also works far better with children.

On the other side of Kazimierz, on Szeroka street, the Old Synagogue covers the documented history of Krakow’s Jewish community - the counterweight to the legend this house only borrows its name from.

Background

The Gothic house went up in the 14th century on the frontage of the market square of Kazimierz, the town Casimir the Great founded in 1335 and which stayed separate from Krakow for more than four centuries. In the 16th century the owner was Bartolomeo Berrecci, the Florentine court architect of Sigismund I and the designer of the Sigismund Chapel at Wawel, and after him his daughter Anna. The house was rebuilt in almost every century, which is why the detail runs from Gothic through to the 18th century.

It entered the register of monuments on 20 February 1968 as number A-235. A coffee bar called “Esterka” operated in the building through the 1950s and 1960s. The thorough restoration of 1978-1985 recovered the architectural detail and the sandstone base, and in 1987 the house was handed to the Ethnographic Museum.
