What to expect

Wilanow Palace is the Baroque residence of King Jan III Sobieski, built between 1677 and 1696. People call it “Poland’s Versailles,” but that undersells it – Wilanow has its own character entirely. It is one of the very few historic residences in Warsaw that survived both the Partitions and both World Wars intact.

The ground floor and piano nobile take you through royal chambers from the 17th and 18th centuries – the White Room, King’s Antechamber, and Chinese Room with original lacquer panels. The collection includes works by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and the famous equestrian portrait of Stanislaw Kostka Potocki by Jacques-Louis David.

The palace itself takes 1.5-2 hours. But the real draw is the grounds – geometric Italian Baroque parterres, a romantic English-Chinese garden designed by Szymon Bogumil Zug with cascades and winding paths, and a rose garden. Budget at least 3-4 hours for the palace and gardens together.

Tips

  • Free Thursdays – admission to the palace, gardens and park is free. Collect tickets from the box office starting at 9:00. Arrive early – ticket numbers are limited for conservation reasons.
  • “Museum for 1 PLN” ticket for children aged 7-16 – exceptionally good value.
  • Audio guide (14 PLN) or free mobile tour app with QR codes placed throughout the palace. Worth using – the interiors lose half their charm without the historical context.
  • Start with the gardens if you arrive in the morning. The light is best for photos, and you can enter the palace queue-free afterwards.
  • High season tickets (April-October) cost 70 PLN. Low season: 60 PLN.
  • Park admission is now 15 PLN (changed in 2026 – previously free).
  • In autumn, the Royal Garden of Light returns (from October 17) – spectacular illuminations of the grounds after dark.

Getting there

By bus: “Wilanow” stop is right at the palace gate. Bus 116 or 180 from the Old Town/Nowy Swiat area (~35 min). Route 180 runs along the Royal Route – you will see half of Warsaw on the way. From Centralna station: bus 519 or 200 (~30 min).

Metro + bus: M1 to Wilanowska station, then bus 139, 200, 251 or 339. Note: the metro stop is still about 5 km from the palace.

By tram: Line 16, stop Swiatynia Opatrznosci Bozej – 6 minute walk to the palace.

By car: Parking available near the palace. Can be crowded on weekends and free Thursdays.
