    What to expect

The tenement at ul. Strzelecka 8 is one of Warsaw’s most sobering memorial sites - and one of its least known, even to locals. Built in 1936-1937, the building was seized by Soviet security services at the turn of 1944 and 1945, shortly after the Red Army entered the right-bank districts. In the winter of 1945 it housed the quarters of General Ivan Serov, the NKVD plenipotentiary attached to the 1st Belorussian Front - the man who directed the first wave of Soviet repression against the Polish independence underground.

From 20 February 1945 the building served as the seat of the Provincial Office of Public Security (UB), communist Poland’s secret police, for the Warsaw region. Upper floors were converted into interrogation rooms, 25 basement rooms became detention cells, and two cubbyholes under the stairs were used as punishment cells. According to the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), many thousands of detainees passed through the cells in 1945-1948, mostly soldiers and activists of the anti-communist underground; an unknown number died as a result of torture by NKVD and UB officers. A detention facility operated in the building from 1944 to 1956.

The most powerful testimony is preserved in the basement: original inscriptions scratched into the cell walls by prisoners - names, dates, prayers, makeshift calendars. These form the core of the memorial exhibition that the IPN opened here in 2020, alongside documents on the victims, the perpetrators, and the machinery of postwar repression.

This is a place of martyrdom rather than a conventional museum - there are no interactive galleries, and the visit calls for quiet attention. Given the subject matter of torture and death, it is better suited to visitors aged roughly 14 and up.

    Tips

    • Admission is free and no booking is needed for individual visitors - just turn up Mon-Fri between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. For orientation, a museum ticket elsewhere in Warsaw typically costs 15-30 PLN (about 3.50-7 EUR), so this costs you nothing but time.
    • Organized groups of more than 10 people must book in advance: +48 22 270 15 38 or strzelecka8.warszawa@ipn.gov.pl. Staff speak Polish; email ahead if you need English.
    • Closed on weekends - plan it as a weekday stop on a Praga itinerary.
    • The official site offers a virtual tour plus searchable databases of prisoners and wall inscriptions - worth a look before or after your visit (the site is in Polish; a browser translator handles it well).
    • Combine it with a walk through old Praga: Konopacki Palace stands just across the street, and the Museum of Warsaw Praga is a few minutes away.

    Getting there

Strzelecka 8 sits in Praga Północ (North Praga), the historic district on the east bank of the Vistula, at the corner of Strzelecka and Środkowa streets. The nearest metro station is Szwedzka (line M2), a few minutes’ walk away; trams and buses run along Stalowa and 11 Listopada streets. From the city center, the M2 metro gets you there in about fifteen minutes.
