Treasures of the Middle Ages

One of the two temporary exhibitions with which the State Archaeological Museum reopened after the long modernisation of the Warsaw Arsenal. The museum opened it to visitors on 2 March 2026 and gives no closing date.

The objects on display are the finest pieces from the collection of the Department of the Middle Ages and the Archaeology of the Modern Period at the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw. They are unique works of considerable artistic value from the medieval period, dated between the 6th and the 13th century. Among them are earrings of various types, temple rings, finger rings, bracelets, beads, lunulae, round pendants and pendants in the shape of miniature axes, bells and fish teeth, encolpia, horseshoe brooches and a range of other objects. The artefacts, made of gold, silver, glass and bronze, are shown singly or in sets such as necklaces. They formed the contents of hoards and deposits hidden in the Middle Ages at moments of danger or unrest. One such example is the hoard from the village of Borucin, representing the material culture of the early Middle Ages and a Slavic style.

What to expect

An exhibition of jewellery and small objects in gold, silver, glass and bronze, dated between the 6th and the 13th century. The pieces are shown singly or in sets, for instance as necklaces.

The museum singles out one group in particular: the hoard from the village of Borucin, representing the material culture of the early Middle Ages and a Slavic style. Hoards of this kind were buried at moments of danger - what is a display case today was once a decision made in a hurry.
