What to expect

A tradition room inside an active military headquarters - the Warsaw Garrison Command, right next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Pilsudski Square. Open since 2006, it focuses on two threads: the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Saxon Axis architectural complex.

Exhibits: original bladed weapons and firearms from the Kosciuszko Insurrection (1794), the November Uprising (1830-31), and the interwar period. Military eagle cap badges from the Polish Legions and the Second Republic era. A standout section - uhlan cavalry equipment from 1936-1939, preserved in remarkable condition.

The real curiosity is the set of commemorative guest books with autographs of heads of state and dignitaries who visited the Command: Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI.

The building dates to 1915, built on the site of a 17th-century Saxon carriage house. Redesigned in 1935-1937 by architect C. Przybylski - the monumental facade with a state eagle and the inscription “MCMXXXVI.” Damaged in 1944, rebuilt by Bohdan Pniewski.

Pilsudski Square is in the heart of Srodmiescie (central Warsaw), adjacent to the Saxon Garden.

About the patron

Gen. Henryk Odrowaz-Minkiewicz (1880-1940) - defender of Warsaw in 1920 during the Polish-Bolshevik War, first commander of the Border Defence Corps (KOP), victim of the Katyn massacre. As the highest-ranking officer in Soviet captivity at Kozielsk, he represented all prisoners. Murdered around 9 April 1940. Posthumously promoted to the rank of general broni (three-star general) in 2007.
