The May Coup: A Caricaturist's Sharp Eye
20 May 2026 - 30 September 2026
From 20 May to 30 September 2026 the Museum of Independence showed its own caricatures of the 1926 May Coup and Sanacja rule by Gustaw Rogalski (1887-1939) and Zdzisław Czermański (1900-1970) in its main building, the Przebendowski/Radziwiłł Palace.
The two artists’ satirical drawings were a direct, often merciless commentary on the state of the country and its leading political figures. The material captured the political mood of the era more vividly than most textbooks. The show was curated by Dr Jacek Konik, who gave curator’s tours while it ran, including one on 15 July 2026 (museum announcement, in Polish).

After the show
The show leaves behind a catalogue, “Zamach majowy i sanacja / surowym okiem karykatury”, published by the Museum of Independence’s own press (Warsaw 2026, paperback, 92 pages, ISBN 978-83-68378-45-0, in Polish). Alongside reproductions of the caricatures it carries the curator’s essay on politics and everyday life after the coup, an essay by Małgorzata Karolina Piekarska on Rogalski and Czermański, and a list of the works shown. It costs 75 PLN at the museum’s online bookshop. If you only want to see the drawings, you need not buy it: the museum offers the whole catalogue free as a PDF on its catalogue page.
