What to expect

The Museum of Geodesy occupies a room inside the headquarters of Warsaw Geodetic Enterprise (WPG) at ul. Biograficzna 2 in the Bielany district. Opened on 14 December 2007, it was the first geodesy museum in Poland’s history. If you have ever wondered how Warsaw was measured before GPS existed, this is where you find the answer.

The exhibition is divided into sections: maps, calculating machines, drawing instruments, office accessories, and geodetic textbooks. The collection spans theodolites, levelling instruments, and tacheometers from around the world – the oldest being American instruments from the late 19th century. Among the exhibits: an R. Reiss levelling instrument from the early 1900s, a Soviet N-3 from 1985, and a Theo120 theodolite made by Carl Zeiss Jena in the 1960s. A virtual tour is available on the WPG website.

This is a corporate museum, not a public institution. You cannot walk in off the street – visits are by appointment only through WPG or during Museum Night.

Tips

  • Museum Night is the easiest way to see the collection without formalities. WPG regularly participates.
  • Group visits require contacting the WPG secretariat in advance. Call ahead – this operates like a company, not a museum with a ticket desk.
  • Niche subject matter. If surveying history does not interest you, this is not your place. But if you catch yourself staring at old maps and precision instruments – this is a treasure.
  • Virtual tour at wpg.com.pl/muzeum lets you judge whether a visit is worth the trip.

Getting there

Metro: Młociny station (M1) – about 15 minutes on foot or 2 bus stops towards Wólka Węglowa.

Bus: Stops Muzeum Łowiectwa i Jeździectwa or Wólka Węglowa – lines 181, 114 and others. Check ZTM timetables, as the area has fewer connections than the centre.

By car: Bielany is not the city centre – parking is much easier. The area is mostly offices, so street parking should be available.

Nearby museums

Bielany is not a museum district. The nearest major museums require a bus or metro ride towards the centre or Żoliborz.
