What to expect

The Fort Institute of Photography (Instytut Fotografii Fort, IFF) is Warsaw’s only institution devoted entirely to photography, combining an exhibition gallery with an open reading room. The foundation has operated since 2016 on the grounds of Fort Mokotów, a 19th-century fortification in the Mokotów district south of the centre, and since April 2026 it occupies larger premises in building 2 at Szpilmana 6 - gallery, reading room, bookshop and a café corner under one roof.

The programme runs solo and group shows by Polish and international photographers - contemporary documentary, classic reportage, visual arts - usually built around current social and cultural themes. There is no permanent collection: exhibitions rotate several times a year, so check the current programme at fiff.org.pl before you go. IFF is also a regular Warsaw Gallery Weekend venue.

The second pillar is the reading room: some 2,500 photo albums, photobooks and theory titles, free to read on site. It is the only open photo-book collection of this scale in Poland - from Alfred Stieglitz albums to the newest Polish publications. No registration, no reader’s card - walk in and read.

Tips

• Exhibitions are free. Only selected events - workshops, guided tours - carry registration or a symbolic ticket (gallery till or the online shop).
• Mind the unusual hours. On weekdays the gallery opens at 14:00 (Wed-Fri, until 19:00); weekends from 12:00. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
• Holiday closures: IFF is closed on 6 January, 4 June, 1 and 11 November, 24-26 December and 31 December.
• The reading room keeps gallery hours. Books are read on site only (no lending) - on your first visit, ask the staff for a quick introduction. The online catalogue lets you check for a title before making the trip.
• Allow 30-60 minutes for the exhibition, more if you settle into the reading room with a coffee - there is a café corner in the building, plus restaurants on the Fort Mokotów grounds.
• Photography is allowed without flash, for private use. Free Wi-Fi.
• Accessibility: the gallery is on the ground floor and barrier-free, but the reading room is upstairs with stair-only access - staff will bring selected publications down on request. The approach to the entrance can be uneven (historic fort terrain).
• Exhibitions are captioned in Polish; events in other languages are flagged in the programme.

Getting there

Address: ul. Władysława Szpilmana 6, 02-634 Warszawa (Fort Mokotów, building 2), Mokotów district.

Metro: Racławicka station (M1, the north-south blue line) - about a 15-minute walk along allotment gardens.

Tram: line 17 and any tram terminating at the Mokotów depot, Wołoska stop - about 15 minutes from Warszawa Centralna station.

Bike: bike racks on the Fort grounds; Mokotów has a decent cycle-path network.

Car: enter the Fort Mokotów grounds from Racławicka street; paid parking on site.

Nearby: the Geological Museum PIG and the Museum of Cursed Soldiers on Rakowiecka street, and the Królikarnia Sculpture Museum on Puławska street.
