What to expect

Centrum Nauki Kopernik (Copernicus Science Centre) is not a museum in the traditional sense – nothing here sits behind glass with a “do not touch” sign. This is 15,000 square metres of hands-on science: over 450 interactive exhibits spread across two floors on the bank of the Vistula. You turn cranks, press buttons, run experiments, and build things. Think London’s Science Museum or San Francisco’s Exploratorium, but newer and more interactive. About a million people visit every year, making it one of Warsaw’s most popular attractions.

Six permanent galleries cover wildly different ground. The Experimental Zone is the main exhibition space – physics and natural phenomena in a huge open hall. Buzzz! is designed for children under 5, all sensory exploration. LivingLAB deals with social sciences (psychology, sociology experiments you participate in). Thinkatorium is a creative building workshop for ages 8 and up. The High Voltage Theatre delivers live science shows with dramatic electrical discharges. And the Robotic Theatre stages performances by robots – fairy tales meets engineering.

Separately, the Heavens of Copernicus Planetarium occupies a boulder-shaped building next door with a spherical projection screen. It requires a separate ticket, or you can buy a combined ticket (68 PLN weekday / 70 PLN weekend, ~15 EUR).

Allow at least 3 hours for a comfortable visit. If you want to see everything, plan for 5. Children aged 6-16 will be in heaven – this place was built for them. Adults without kids can still enjoy it, especially on Friday evenings during “Lates” – an adults-only (18+) session from 18:00 to 20:00 for 55 PLN (~12 EUR).

Tips

  • Book tickets online in advance – this is non-negotiable. Walk-up tickets frequently sell out, especially on weekends. This is the single most repeated piece of advice from every visitor.
  • Best time to visit: Tuesday to Thursday morning for the smallest crowds. Weekends are brutally crowded. Friday evening Lates (18+, 55 PLN) is a unique adults-only experience.
  • How long to spend: 3 hours comfortably, 5 hours to see everything, 2 hours absolute minimum. Don’t try to squeeze this into an hour.
  • Buzzz! for toddlers – if you have a child under 5, this gallery is purpose-built for them. Strollers are allowed in most galleries (except Buzzz!, theatres, and planetarium).
  • Quiet hours – first Tuesday of each month, 13:00-18:00, with reduced stimuli. Great for sensory-sensitive children. There’s also a quiet room outside the exhibition area for breaks.
  • Rooftop Garden and Discovery Park outside – both free. The garden is open May through September, daily 10:00-20:00. Nice for a break between galleries.
  • Food: Three options on site: Bistro Wiem (lunches, desserts, kids’ meals near the entrance), First Floor Cafe (sandwiches and coffee inside the exhibition area), and Planetarium Cafe. You can also bring your own food to designated eating areas within the galleries.
  • Bag storage: Self-service lockers in the cloakroom (left of entrance). Dimensions: 95x40x40 cm. Requires a 2 PLN coin (returned). Backpacks and large bags must be stored.
  • No re-entry – once you exit through the gates, you cannot return. Exception: combined exhibition + planetarium ticket holders can return to the exhibitions via an internal corridor after the planetarium show.
  • Ticket office closes 1 hour before the exhibitions close. One more reason to book online.

Getting there

The Copernicus Science Centre sits on the Vistula riverbank in the Powisle district, south of Warsaw’s Old Town. It’s extremely well connected by metro.

Metro: Centrum Nauki Kopernik station (M2, red line) – 5-minute walk. The station is literally named after the centre, so you can’t miss it.

Bus: Lines 127, 162, 185 – stop “Metro Centrum Nauki Kopernik”, about 200 metres from the entrance.

Tram: Nearest stop “Most Poniatowskiego” – about 13 minutes on foot. Trams are not the most convenient option for this destination.

Train: Warszawa Powisle station (suburban rail S1/S2) – roughly 14 minutes’ walk.

Car: Underground car park beneath the building, 5 PLN/hour (~1 EUR), open 7 days. Height limit 190 cm. Note: parking availability may be affected by construction of the Copernican Revolution Lab extension – check before driving.

Bike: Veturilo bike-share stations nearby along the Vistula cycling path (Wislostrada).

Background

The Copernicus Science Centre was established in June 2005 and opened to the public on November 5, 2010. Designed by the RAr-2 architectural firm from Ruda Slaska with engineering by Buro Happold, the two-storey building covers 15,000 square metres on the Vistula bank, topped by a rooftop garden. A major extension – the Copernican Revolution Lab (Pracownia Przewrotu Kopernikanskiego), adding 6,000 square metres – sits nearby, connected by an underground tunnel. Since opening, the centre has welcomed over 8 million visitors (as of 2018). It also organizes the annual Science Picnic (Piknik Naukowy), Europe’s largest outdoor science event, running since 2008. The centre is funded by the City of Warsaw and Poland’s Ministry of Education and Science.
