    What to expect

Let’s be honest about what this is: not a museum with display cases and a permanent collection, but a history education center run by the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), Poland’s state institute researching 20th-century history. Its full name honors President Lech Kaczyński, who died in the 2010 Smolensk air crash. If you want artifacts, the nearby museums will serve you better. But if you are traveling with a school-age kid, or you are curious how a state institute teaches history through VR headsets and gaming pods, this is one of the more interesting free stops in the city center - 1,000 square meters right on Marszałkowska, Warsaw’s main north-south artery.

The heart of the place is the Technology Zone (194 square meters), billed as an “immersive history education zone”: three futuristic Cooler Master Orb X gaming capsules with panoramic screens, two VR stations with Meta Quest 2 headsets (minimum age 13), a hologram display and educational tablets loaded with quizzes and podcasts. VR content includes “Świadectwo poMOCY”, an interactive film about the Ulma family, Poles executed for sheltering Jews during the German occupation, and IPN’s game portfolio features “Szybowcowa ‘87”, a free VR title set in 1980s communist Poland, also available on Steam. Mind that most content is produced primarily for Polish audiences - ask staff what is available in English before committing to a session.

Beyond the tech zone there is a 120-seat conference hall hosting lectures, film screenings, concerts and book launches, an education room for school groups, and an IPN history bookstore with around 1,000 printed titles plus audiobooks and podcasts - strong on 20th-century Polish history, though mostly in Polish.

The best part: admission to all events is free - no fees, no tickets, per the institution’s own policy.

    Tips

    • Everything is free, but some activities - including the immersive history lessons in the technology zone - require advance booking through the reservation system (Polish only; email przystanek.historia@ipn.gov.pl in English if needed).
    • VR stations are 13+. With younger children, stick to the tablets, the gaming capsules and family activities.
    • Check the events calendar first. The place lives off its program of lectures, workshops and educational walks - a random walk-in on a quiet afternoon will show you far less.
    • Closed on Sundays - the reverse of most Warsaw museums, which close on Mondays. Saturday runs normal hours, 10:00 AM-6:00 PM.
    • Budget context: since admission costs nothing, this pairs well as a free add-on to a paid museum day nearby (EUR 0 - a rarity in the city center).

    Getting there

The address is ul. Marszałkowska 107, in the strict city center (Śródmieście district). It is a few minutes’ walk from both Świętokrzyska metro station (lines M1/M2) and Centrum station (M1), with trams and buses running along Marszałkowska. Skip the car - this is a paid parking zone in the most congested part of Warsaw.
