It was here that many opposition activists were held after 13 December 1981. The pavilion and its cells have changed little since then, and the exhibition uses that authentic space to tell visitors about the crimes of martial law, the repression, and the determination of people who refused to accept the breaking of basic civil rights. The display occupies three floors of the prison pavilion. The ground floor shows how hope was born and then brutally suppressed after martial law was imposed. The first floor presents the reality of the internment camps: correspondence, personal objects and documents. On 13 April 1946, on the platform of honour at the foot of the Chrobry Embankment, when Boleslaw Bierut began to speak, the young people started shouting “Mikolajczyk!”, “Down with Bierut”, “Down with the communists”. To mark the occasion the museum presents an exhibition of nearly 130 photographs by Elliott Erwitt, the legendary photographer of the Magnum Photos agency. It is the first retrospective of this scale in Poland, covering more than 70 years of Erwitt’s work - an artist who still inspires photographers of every generation around the world. Elliott Erwitt was born in Paris and spent his childhood in Italy; his family later returned to France and, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, moved to the United States. He began taking photographs in his early youth and, over several decades of his career, documented the political and social history of the twentieth century. As a photojournalist he travelled across the United States, Europe, Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico, Japan and Pakistan, and he also worked in advertising and film. When he joined Magnum in 1953 at Robert Capa’s invitation, he was already working as a freelancer and his pictures were appearing in leading American magazines. On assignment for Time magazine he visited Poland twice, in 1959 and 1964, photographing in Warsaw, Krakow, Czestochowa and Gdansk among other places. The exhibition is laid out in 18 prison cells of the former General Pavilion. They hold, among other things, documents belonging to Kornel Morawiecki, the leader of Fighting Solidarity, including his passport annulled by the communist authorities, and patriotic jewellery made underground by the sculptor Ludwika Ogorzelec. It was an invention that delighted people at the end of the nineteenth century, yet today it is sometimes seen as less exciting. It is slower than modern means of transport, it does not allow large loads to be carried, it offers no protection from the rain and it usually serves only one person. The necropolis was located thanks to a police investigation, which made it possible to recover more than a hundred objects from looters. The museum gives neither an opening nor a closing date. The State Archaeological Museum on the exhibition (translated from the Polish original): The exhibition “The Yotvingian Eldorado” presents sensational finds from the 12th and 13th centuries, coming from the richest Yotvingian cemetery, discovered at Krukówek. The necropolis was located thanks to a covert police investigation, which made it possible to secure the site and recover more than 100 priceless objects from looters. The display shows the wealth of the old elites through unique weapons, finely worked ornaments (including the so-called crowns of the dead) and everyday objects. Visitors can learn about the fascinating cremation rite, in which grave goods were deliberately destroyed so that, according to belief, they would be “reborn” together with their owner in the afterlife. This is an exceptional opportunity to see the results of the cooperation between the museums of Suwałki and Warsaw in saving and studying this priceless heritage.museums
