Warsaw Museums - A Complete Guide to the City

How many museums are in Warsaw

This site catalogues 149 Warsaw museums and museum venues, each with documented hours, prices and directions. The largest subject groups: history (63 profiles), science and technology (30), art (28) and culture (27).

That number has a practical consequence. You cannot “do the museums of Warsaw” - you have to pick a filter: a district, a subject, or a free day. All three are below.

Where they cluster

Śródmieście, the central district, holds 60 venues; the Old Town (Stare Miasto) adds another 12. That is one walkable zone, and the only place where two museums in a day need no transport at all.

Outside that core: Wola 15, Praga Północ 12 (across the river), Mokotów 10, Żoliborz 8, Ochota 7, Bielany 4, Wilanów 4. Wola and Żoliborz are about 15 minutes from the centre by tram or metro. Wilanów is the outlier - roughly 30 minutes by bus, and it deserves its own half-day rather than being tacked onto another visit.

Working rule: one day, one district. Two large museums at opposite ends of the city means you rush the second one.

When entry is free

Polish state museums are legally required to name one day a week when the permanent exhibition is free - Article 10(2) of the Museums Act. Each museum picks its own day, so the free days are scattered across the whole week.

Thursday carries the most free entries. Free that day: the Warsaw Uprising Museum, POLIN, the Museum of Warsaw, the Polish Army Museum, Wilanów Palace and Zachęta. Wednesday is the Royal Castle, Tuesday the National Museum, Friday the Polish History Museum and the Royal Łazienki buildings.

On top of that, 61 venues in the catalogue are free every day, regardless of the weekday. Most are smaller university, institute and trade museums.

Two caveats that ruin plans: free entry covers the permanent exhibition, not temporary shows, and at POLIN and Wilanów the free tickets are capped and need booking in advance.

Pick by subject

History

The largest group, and the city’s strongest suit. The Warsaw Uprising Museum (Wola, 35 PLN, reduced 30 PLN, free Thursdays, about 2.5 hours) is the context for everything else in Warsaw. POLIN (Muranów, 45 PLN (~€10.50), reduced 35 PLN, free Thursdays) tells a thousand years of Polish Jewish history. The Royal Castle (Old Town, 30 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, free Wednesdays) is the rebuilt royal residence, audio guide included in the ticket.

Art

The National Museum (Al. Jerozolimskie, 50 PLN (€11.50), reduced 35 PLN, 1 PLN for students under 26, free Tuesdays) holds Poland’s largest collection. It stays open until 20:00 on Fridays, half price after 17:00. Zachęta (30 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, free Thursdays, 12:00-20:00) has no permanent collection - shows rotate every two or three months, so check the programme before you set out. The Museum of Modern Art (Marszałkowska 103, 40 PLN (€9), reduced 30 PLN) occupies a building that opened in 2024.

Science and technology

The Copernicus Science Centre (Powiśle, on the riverbank; 48 PLN (~~€11) on weekdays, 50 PLN (~~€11.50) at weekends, reduced 34 and 36 PLN, planetarium a separate 34 PLN) opens seven days a week and has no free day. Book online - it sells out on weekends and in the school holidays. The Museum of Evolution inside the Palace of Culture (20 PLN, reduced 10 PLN, one hour) is the cheap, quick alternative.

Unusual

The Neon Museum (Palace of Culture, 4th floor, 25 PLN, reduced 18 PLN, one hour) collects post-war neon signs from across Eastern Europe. The Gravity Museum (Świętojerska street, 45 PLN (~€10.50), reduced 35 PLN, about 75 minutes) is built around physics and astronomy experiments.

With children

Copernicus is the obvious pick from age four. The Polish Army Museum at the Citadel (40 PLN (€9), reduced 30 PLN, free Thursdays, ages 5+) parks tanks and aircraft outdoors, so it works best in good weather. The Royal Łazienki park is open daily 6:00-21:00 and always free, with the ticketed Palace on the Isle inside it (50 PLN (€11.50), reduced 25 PLN, free Fridays).

Cheap and free

Beyond the free days there is a separate category of token-price entries: Museums for 1 PLN in Warsaw. The observation deck of the Palace of Culture (25 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, daily 10:00-20:00, 45 minutes) is not free, but the ticket stays valid for 12 months.

Rules that save you a wasted trip

Monday is the worst day. 85 of the venues described here are closed. Tuesday is the second worst: 42 closed, including the Warsaw Uprising Museum and POLIN.
Open on Mondays: the Copernicus Science Centre, the Palace of Culture deck, the Łazienki park, Wilanów Palace and POLIN. Those are the safest starts to a week.
Prices run 20-50 PLN (~€4.50-11.50) for a full-price ticket at the major institutions, with Wilanów at the top (70 PLN / ~€16 for the palace, gardens a separate 15 PLN).
Audio guides usually cost extra, except at the Royal Castle where one is included.
On free days, arrive at opening. A queue at 10:00 and a queue at 13:00 are different orders of problem.
Check the museum’s own site before you travel. Hours shift seasonally, and temporary exhibitions can close part of the permanent display.

Where to start

One day in Warsaw: the Warsaw Uprising Museum in the morning, the Old Town and the Royal Castle in the afternoon.

Two days: add POLIN or the National Museum, depending on whether you lean towards history or art.

Three days or more: only now do Wilanów, the Citadel with the Polish Army Museum and the Polish History Museum, or a full afternoon at Copernicus, make sense.
