Night of Museums in Warsaw's Old Town 2026 - 6 museums on foot

Warsaw’s Old Town (Stare Miasto) packs six museums into a walkable rectangle smaller than most city parks. On Night of Museums 2026 (May 16-17), all six open their doors for free within a 10-minute walking radius. No trams, no transfers - just comfortable shoes.

This guide maps them into a single walking route. I’ll tell you where to start, how long to spend at each stop, and how to dodge the worst crowds.

Want to plan your own route? All 6 museums are pre-loaded in the Night of Museums Planner 2026 - map, timeline, share with friends.

Suggested Evening Plan

Start at 18:00 - Warsaw Museum opens first and has the most to offer (90th anniversary celebration, basement tours, English-language guides). Get here early, before the main wave arrives.

19:00-19:30 - Walk to Pharmacy Museum on Piwna street. Small venue (groups of 20 max), so earlier is better.

19:30-20:15 - Heritage Interpretation Centre on Brzozowa street. Exhibition on the destruction and rebuilding of Old Town. Expert-led walks at 19:00 and 20:00 (Polish), English tour at 21:00.

20:15-21:00 - Archdiocese Museum. Lecture on historic embroidery at 20:30 (Polish). ASP art students demonstrate conservation techniques live.

21:00-21:15 - Barbican. Shortest stop - 15 minutes of self-guided exploration, no registration needed.

21:15-22:00 - Cold War Museum on Podwale street. Colonel Kuklinski’s bunker, VR experiences, Soviet military maps, documentary screenings. A strong finish to the route.

Museum Details

1. Warsaw Museum (Muzeum Warszawy)

Old Town Market Square 28-42 | 18:00-01:00 | free entry

Anniversary Night of Museums celebrating 90 years. Guided basement tours (Polish 19:00, English 21:00), history pathway walks (Polish 20:00, English 22:00), access to normally closed areas (20:00-20:30). Dedicated accessibility tour for adults with autism or intellectual disability (20:30-21:15).

Tour tickets available from 2 May at muzeumwarszawy.pl. Groups of 30 max - book early. Self-guided visits need no ticket.

Tip: Arrive at 18:00 and start with galleries on your own. Guided tours begin at 19:00 - you’ll have the permanent collection covered by then.

2. Pharmacy Museum (Muzeum Farmacji)

ul. Piwna 31/33 | 19:00-00:00 (last entry 23:30) | free entry

“Antonina’s 160th Birthday” - exhibition honoring Antonina Lesniewska, the museum’s founder. The reconstructed interwar pharmacy is the collection’s finest piece. Intimate spaces (groups of 20) mean you may queue during peak hours.

Tip: Visit between 19:00 and 20:00, before the crowd from the Market Square spills onto the side streets.

3. Heritage Interpretation Centre (CIZ)

ul. Brzozowa 11/13 | 18:00-01:00 (last entry 00:30) | free (tickets required)

Exhibition “Destruction and Rebuilding of the Old Town.” Expert-led walks: Prof. Blazej Brzostek at 19:00, Tomek Krajewski at 20:00 (both Polish), English tour at 21:00. Groups of 30 max.

Note: Free tickets required - this is crowd control, not a paid booking. Arrive with time to spare.

Tip: The 21:00 English tour is rare during Night of Museums. If you’re visiting with non-Polish speakers, this is the stop to prioritize.

4. Archdiocese Museum (Muzeum Archidiecezji Warszawskiej)

ul. Dziekania 1 | 19:30-23:30 (closing 23:55) | free entry

Live demonstrations: ASP art students creating replicas of historic embroidery. Lecture by Prof. Monika Stachurska at 20:30 (Polish). Permanent exhibitions: Art Deco and Sacrum.

Note: The Beksinski exhibition is EXCLUDED from free Night of Museums access.

Tip: Arrive by 20:15 to catch the lecture. Conservation demonstrations run all evening.

5. Barbican (Barbakan)

ul. Nowomiejska | 18:00-00:00 (last entry 00:00) | free entry

Self-guided visit, about 15 minutes. No registration, no queues. The 16th-century defensive walls look striking under night lighting.

Note: Interior not accessible for wheelchair users.

6. Cold War Museum (Muzeum Zimnej Wojny)

ul. Podwale 15 | 19:00-00:00 | free entry, no registration

Colonel Kuklinski’s bunker with themed guided tours. VR experiences, free cinema (Cold War documentaries and animations), newly discovered Kuklinski photographs from a “study trip,” Soviet military maps. Maximum 80 visitors at a time.

Note: Not wheelchair accessible.

Tip: VR and the bunker are the main draws - head straight for them. Cinema and exhibitions work well as a wait-time filler.

Express Route (3 Hours)

Short on time? Pick three stops:

  1. 18:00-19:15 - Warsaw Museum (galleries on your own, basement if you have tickets)
  2. 19:15-19:45 - Barbican (quick stop, 15 min)
  3. 19:45-21:00 - Cold War Museum (bunker + VR)

Maximum variety in minimum time.

Practical Tips

Getting there: Bus 116, 178, 180, or 503 to Castle Square (plac Zamkowy). Metro M2 (Nowy Swiat-Uniwersytet station) + 10-minute walk. Parking in the area is effectively impossible on NM night - don’t drive.

Food: Restaurants on the Market Square and Piwna street exist but charge tourist prices. Better options: ul. Podwale (bars, fast food), Miodowa or Dluga streets (cafes open late). Bring water - in the crowds, you don’t want to waste time finding a shop.

Crowds: Peak between 20:00 and 22:00. Warsaw Museum and Cold War Museum will be the busiest. Starting at 18:00 gives you a clear advantage.

Rest: Old Town Market Square has benches. After the Barbican, the city walls make a pleasant short walk.

Bonus: Museum of Literature

The Museum of Literature normally sits on the Old Town Market Square, but for Night of Museums 2026 it relocates to the House of Literature (Krakowskie Przedmiescie 87/89) - a 10-minute walk south from Castle Square.

Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz’s study, theater premiere (International Theatre SKO), Stefan Zeromski exhibition (100th death anniversary), 75th anniversary of the House of Literature. Hours: 19:00-01:00, free entry.

A good cap to the evening if you want one more stop after the main route.
