Night of Museums at the Citadel 2026 - 5 Museums in One Place

The Warsaw Citadel is a 19th-century fortress that now houses four museums on its grounds. On Night of Museums 2026 (May 16-17), the Museum of Sport and Tourism at the foot of the hill joins them. Five museums within a 15-minute walk.

This is one of the few NM clusters where starting at 16:00 makes sense. The Polish Army Museum and Katyn Museum open two hours before the city center picks up. There is one catch: the Polish Army Museum closes at 22:00 - earlier than almost everything else in the city.

This guide sequences your evening so you see everything, and still make the torch-lit walk at 21:30.

Want to plan your own route? All 5 museums are pre-loaded in the Night of Museums Planner 2026 - map, timeline, share with friends.

Suggested Evening Plan

Start at 16:30 - Polish Army Museum. First to open and first to close (22:00). Military happenings, expert-led walks, soldier songs concerts. Terrain game “Soldiers of General Anders” and a virtual shooting range for children. Come before the main wave - crowds arrive after 19:00.

17:30-18:45 - Katyn Museum, 5 minutes through the compound. Guided group tours run every hour - catch the 18:00 one. Note: museum is intended for visitors 14 and older.

19:00-19:45 - Museum of Polish History, 5 minutes’ walk within the Citadel compound (ul. Gwardii 1). Free tickets from muzhp.pl. Guided tours every 30 minutes (19:00-22:00) - join the first tour at 19:00. Torch-lit “Cytadela nocą” walks at 20:00, 21:00, and 22:00, a documentary about 1989, and workshops.

20:00-21:00 - Museum of Sport and Tourism, 10 minutes’ walk along the Vistula. The evening is themed around chess - 100th anniversary of the Polish Chess Federation, grandmaster Agnieszka Brustman running a simultaneous game. For something more physical: a rowing simulator with Olympic medallist Kajetan Broniewski and a glider simulator courtesy of the Polish Aero Club. Food truck outside.

21:00 onwards - Museum of Independence, Pavilion X. Historical reenactors from 19:00 to 23:00, vintage communist-era cars in the courtyard. The finale: torch-lit walk at 21:30, route called “From the Pear Tree to the Gallows” along the fortress walls. One of the few NM experiences that takes place entirely outdoors.

Museum Details

1. Polish Army Museum (Muzeum Wojska Polskiego)

Southern Pavilion, Warsaw Citadel | 16:00-22:00 | free entry

IMPORTANT: Closes at 22:00 - earlier than every other museum on this route. Visit first, do not save for last.

The Polish Army Museum’s new permanent home at the Citadel holds 1,000 years of Polish military history: hussar armor, tanks, aircraft. Night of Museums adds a live program on top: military happenings in the courtyard, expert-led walks, soldiers’ songs concerts. Terrain game “Soldiers of General Anders” for older visitors, children’s play corner and virtual shooting range for kids.

Tip: If you’re visiting with children, this is the most hands-on location of the evening. The shooting range and terrain game keep them busy for the full visit.

2. Katyn Museum (Muzeum Katyńskie)

ul. Jana Jeziorańskiego 4 (Warsaw Citadel) | 17:00-00:00 | free entry

The only museum in the world dedicated entirely to the Katyn massacre. Guided group tours run every hour throughout the evening - the one night you can experience this place after dark, with a guide.

Note: Intended for visitors aged 14 and older.

Tip: The 18:00 or 19:00 tours have smaller groups. Permanent and temporary exhibitions can be explored between tours without a guide.

3. Museum of Polish History (Muzeum Historii Polski)

ul. Gwardii 1 (Warsaw Citadel) | 18:00-00:00 | free entry (tickets at muzhp.pl)

The museum’s new building on the Citadel grounds. On Night of Museums 2026: guided tours every 30 minutes (19:00-22:00), torch-lit “Cytadela nocą” walks at 20:00, 21:00, and 22:00, a documentary screening about 1989, and workshops.

Tip: Book your free ticket in advance at muzhp.pl - the museum is new and growing in popularity. The “Cytadela nocą” torch walks here are separate from the Pavilion X torch walk at 21:30 - both are worth doing.

4. Museum of Sport and Tourism (Muzeum Sportu i Turystyki)

ul. Wybrzeże Gdyńskie 4 (Olympic Center) | 18:00-00:00 (last entry 23:30) | free entry

The evening is themed around chess - 100th anniversary of the Polish Chess Federation. Grandmaster Agnieszka Brustman runs a simultaneous game (playing multiple opponents at once). Outdoor chess boards, children’s chess competitions (ages 6-10), and chess puzzles (10-15).

Beyond chess: a rowing simulator session with Olympic medallist Kajetan Broniewski, a glider simulator provided by the Polish Aero Club, and boccia competitions for visitors with disabilities. Food truck outside the entrance.

Tip: A chess simultaneous by a grandmaster is rarely seen outside tournaments. Check the museum’s website for the start time and plan your visit around it.

5. Museum of Independence - Pavilion X (Muzeum Niepodległości - X Pawilon)

Pavilion X, Warsaw Citadel | 18:00-01:00 (last entry 00:30) | free entry

Pavilion X was a tsarist prison - from here, Polish patriots were sent into Siberian exile. On Night of Museums, it becomes a stage: historical reenactors (19:00-23:00), curatorial tours of the permanent exhibition, folk costume gallery and student culture section. Vintage communist-era cars parked in the courtyard (19:00-23:00). Open exlibris workshops from 18:00 to 19:30 - no registration, drop in.

The evening’s finale: torch-lit walk at 21:30, route “From the Pear Tree to the Gallows” along the fortress walls. Outdoor event, runs regardless of your museum visit.

Tip: The torch walk is the most memorable moment of this route. If you stay until 21:30, you have a story to tell.

Express Route (2.5 Hours)

Short on time? Three stops instead of five:

  1. 16:30-17:30 - Polish Army Museum (before the crowds, before the 22:00 close)
  2. 17:30-18:45 - Katyn Museum (18:00 guided tour)
  3. 19:00-20:00 - Museum of Sport (chess simultaneous + simulators)

Two hours and two entirely different experiences: heavy wartime history, then sport and games.

Practical Tips

Getting there: Tram 17, 23, 31, or 35 to the Cytadela stop. Bus 116 or 178. Bike: parking on Wybrzeże Gdyńskie. By car: limited spots near Rondo Słomińskiego - don’t count on it.

From the city centre: The Citadel is about 3 km from the Old Town. If you’re combining routes in one evening, a taxi or bike is faster than the tram.

Food: The food truck outside Museum of Sport is the easiest option in the area. No food or cafes inside the Citadel compound. Wybrzeże Gdyńskie and ul. Zakroczymska have options within 10 minutes’ walk.

Crowds: The Citadel attracts far fewer visitors than the Old Town or Palace of Culture. Katyn Museum guided tours can fill up quickly - target the early ones.

Hours - IMPORTANT: Polish Army Museum closes at 22:00, Katyn Museum opens at 17:00, Museum of Polish History opens at 18:00. Do not swap the order - start at the Army Museum and Katyn, end at Pavilion X (for the 21:30 torch walk).
