Free museums in Lublin - what you can see without a ticket on a trip from Warsaw
Lublin has no single day of the week when all its big museums let you in for free. What it does have is two places that never sell tickets at all: the State Museum at Majdanek and Labirynt Gallery. For a day trip from Warsaw that is enough, as long as you do not come on a Monday.
The rest of free Lublin depends on the calendar. The National Museum in Lublin announces its free dates month by month, separately for the castle and for each branch, and the open-air museum announces its free day in its news and keeps the interiors shut that day. Below, first what you can count on, then what to check before you set off.

Majdanek is not a stop to squeeze in between two other museums. The museum allows three hours for a self-guided visit, and the route is almost 5 kilometres long, mostly outdoors. Public transport from the centre takes a quarter of an hour or so, to the stop called Majdanek. The museum advises against visits by children under 14.
Labirynt Gallery at 5 PopieÅ‚uszki Street shows contemporary art. It is a 20-25 minute walk from the Old Town, and an hour is enough for the exhibitions. City listings still quote a price of “8/4 PLN”, but the gallery’s own site says plainly that entry to exhibitions is free.
National Museum: dates set each month
The National Museum in Lublin has no fixed free day of the week. For every month it publishes a list of dates, and a separate one for the castle and for each branch. A castle date does not apply at the Kraków Gate or on Uniwersytecka Street, so before you travel, open the page of the place you are going to.

For conservation reasons the chapel in the castle admits at most 60 people an hour, with entry on the hour, so book it for an early slot. Allow two and a half hours for the whole castle hill.
If the free dates do not fit your trip, the combined ticket “Lublin Castle + Branches” costs 50 PLN (about €11.60, reduced 40 PLN) and covers the castle’s permanent exhibitions, the chapel, the tower and the branches. Only the castle ticket desk sells it, so start the day at the castle and leave the branches for later. Children under 7 get into the castle and the branches free on any day.
Open-air museum: a free day without the interiors
The Lublin Village Open-Air Museum at 96 Warszawska Avenue announces its free-entry day in the news on its website. On that day the displays inside the buildings are closed for conservation work, so you see only what is outdoors.
For a first visit it is better to pay: a regular ticket costs 30 PLN (about €7), reduced 20 PLN, and children under 7 go free. The open-air museum is open every day, Mondays included; in October 9:00-17:00, from November to March 9:00-15:00, last entry one hour before closing.
Which day to pick
- Monday: do not go. Majdanek and Labirynt Gallery are closed, the castle’s permanent exhibitions are shut and the National Museum branches do not open. The only free option left is the gallery in the House of Words.
- Tuesday-Friday: Majdanek, Labirynt and the House of Words are all open, and the National Museum branches are working. The best choice, especially if one of the monthly free dates falls on your day.
- Saturday: Majdanek, Labirynt and the National Museum are open; the House of Words is not.
- Sunday: Majdanek, Labirynt and the castle are open; the Kraków Gate, Pod Zegarem, the Czechowicz Museum and the Pol Manor House are closed.
A one-day plan from Warsaw
- Majdanek in the morning. It opens at 9:00. Give it three hours and wear comfortable shoes.
- Labirynt Gallery in the afternoon. It opens at 12:00 and stays open until 19:00, so there is time after Majdanek.
- If the castle has a free date that day: the castle before Labirynt, two and a half hours on the hill. Add the branches only if they have a free date on the same day.
This plan works Tuesday to Sunday and costs nothing beyond the journey.
Easy mistakes
- Pod Zegarem is not free. The city portal lublin.eu and several tourist sites still say entry is free. Outside the announced dates a ticket costs 10 PLN, and the desk takes cash only.
- The Czechowicz Museum’s English page is out of date. It quotes a 6 PLN ticket and free Wednesdays. The branch’s Polish pages are the ones that apply.
- The castle tower is not part of the free day. The permanent exhibitions and the chapel are free; the tower has its own ticket at 10 PLN.
- The KUL Museum is closed. The Museum of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin charges no admission, but its exhibition hall is closed until further notice, with no reopening date given.
