Best museums in Lublin - the five worth the trip from Warsaw
Muzea.org.pl lists 21 museums in Lublin, and a day trip from the capital has room for three of them at most. Below are the five places nothing in Warsaw replaces, each with the reason stated plainly, then the ones for a second day, and finally what actually shapes your plan: fixed entry times and closing days.
The order is not a verdict on the collections. It follows what you cannot see anywhere else and how much of the day each visit takes.

At the castle, start with the chapel. For conservation reasons it admits no more than 60 people an hour, and tickets are sold for set full hours from 9:00. The combined ticket is sold only at the museum’s ticket desk, not online. From October to March the castle closes an hour earlier than in summer: Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 9:00-17:00, Friday and Saturday until 18:00.
Majdanek is not a visit you follow with anything light. The museum allows three hours for a self-guided visit and advises against it for children under 14. It is open 9:00-18:00 from April to October and 9:00-16:00 from November to March, with last entry one hour before closing.
The Grodzka Gate exhibition is seen only with a guide, at fixed times. Expect about 150 steps and no lift; the centre recommends it from the age of 14.
The open-air museum is the only one of the five where children get space and animals. It is no plan for a rainy day: almost the whole route is outdoors, as at Majdanek. From October it closes at 17:00, from November to March at 15:00. Children under 7 go in free.
The Underground Route stays at 8-12 °C all year, with 160 steps and passages narrowing to 63 centimetres. There is no lift. Skip it if you are claustrophobic or pushing a buggy.

The Kraków Gate and Trinity Tower are the two viewpoints. If you pick one: the Gate costs half as much and comes with a museum of the city’s history, the tower is four metres higher and looks out in all four directions. From November to April the tower publishes no hours, so call +48 695 475 152 before you go.
Pick by what you came for
- Jewish Lublin and the occupation: the Grodzka Gate, Pod Zegarem, then Majdanek, in that order. The sequence matters: first the city and its people, then the jail, then the camp.
- The Old Town and its monuments: the castle chapel, the Underground Route, one viewpoint (the Kraków Gate or Trinity Tower) and Fortuna’s Cellar if you can make 12:00.
- With children: the open-air museum for roughly ages 4 to 12, the cebularz show for 5 to 12, the Underground Route from about 7. Keep Majdanek, the Grodzka Gate and Pod Zegarem for a trip without young children.
- Contemporary art: Labirynt Gallery at 5 Popiełuszki Street, no ticket needed.
Entry times shape the day
Five of the eleven places on this page let you in only at set times. They decide your plan, not distance: everything except Majdanek, the open-air museum and Labirynt sits in the Old Town and on the castle hill.

The Underground Route has a single pool of tickets for the online shop and the Information Centre. If a slot is gone online, it is gone at the desk too.
A day from Warsaw: two ready plans
Plan A, the Old Town (Tuesday-Saturday):
- 9:00 the castle. The chapel in the first hour, then the permanent exhibitions and the tower. You leave around 11:30.
- 12:00 Fortuna’s Cellar at 8 Market Square, if you have a ticket. Without one: the Kraków Gate.
- 14:00 the Underground Route. The entrance is beside the Crown Tribunal in the middle of the Market Square; buy the ticket in advance.
Plan B, the occupation (Tuesday-Friday; Saturdays only from May to September):
- 10:00 the Grodzka Gate, 75 minutes with a guide. Book the 12:00 English tour if you do not speak Polish, and move the next stop back accordingly.
- Around 11:45 Pod Zegarem, 1 Uniwersytecka Street, an hour. Bring cash.
- Afternoon at Majdanek. Public transport from the centre takes a quarter of an hour or so, to the stop called Majdanek. From November to March the last entry is at 15:00, so in those months do not leave Majdanek for last: go in the morning and take the Grodzka Gate at 14:00.
Monday and Sunday
- Monday: Majdanek, Labirynt Gallery, Trinity Tower and the National Museum branches are closed, and the castle’s permanent exhibitions are shut. Open: the castle chapel and tower, the open-air museum, the Underground Route, the Grodzka Gate, Fortuna’s Cellar and the cebularz shows.
- Sunday: the Grodzka Gate, Pod Zegarem, the Kraków Gate and Fortuna’s Cellar are closed. Open: the castle, Majdanek, the open-air museum, the Underground Route, Labirynt, the Cebularz Museum and, in season, Trinity Tower.
Combined tickets
- The castle: permanent exhibitions, chapel and tower bought separately come to 20 + 20 + 10 PLN. The combined ticket costs 40 PLN (reduced 30 PLN); with the National Museum’s branches in the city, 50 PLN (about €11.60, reduced 40 PLN). Sold only at the castle desk.
- The Grodzka Gate - Teatr NN pass: 95 PLN (about €22, reduced 67 PLN), valid 30 days for the Grodzka Gate, the Underground Route, Fortuna’s Cellar and the House of Words. Sold only at the Information Centre, 21 Grodzka Street. For two places, single tickets are cheaper.
- Trinity Tower with the Cathedral: 26 PLN instead of 20 PLN; the extra opens the acoustic sacristy, the treasury and the crypts.
What not to plan
Three museums are closed until further notice, with no reopening date: the Catholic University of Lublin Museum, the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University Museum and the Museum of the Eastern Lands of the Former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Lubomirski Palace.
